As Medicare reimbursements have fallen, it appears many North Texas doctors have chosen to say goodbye to or opt out of treating patients under Medicare. Opting out means that doctors aren’t subject to Medicare’s rules, which limits what they can charge. Currently, the top 10 Texas cities for opt-outs include Houston, Dallas, Plano, Fort Worth, Arlington, and Frisco. Read this D-Magazine article to discover more.
The New York Times recently ran an article about the state of assisted living in America that readers may find interesting and informative. From the quality of care to the regulations governing facilities, various facets of the industry and the care it provides are examined.
“Assisted living communities are intended to be a bridge between living at home and living in a nursing home. Residents can live in apartments or houses, with a high degree of independence, but can still receive help managing their medications and performing daily activities like bathing, dressing and eating.”

With the flu on the rise this year, your care team at Acappella wanted to share some good quick tips to stay happy and healthy. First and foremost, please protect yourself by getting vaccinated! Cleaning experts urge everyone to avoid high-touch areas as much as possible. Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer when necessary. Doors, magazines and pens are always vulnerable places to pick up germs you can’t see. With the flu hitting the Dallas Fort Worth area hard even before peak season, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and your family members. Below is a link to one of our favorite recipes for a warm batch of chicken noodle soup. Perfect for this time of year to stay happy and healthy! https://www.tasteofhome.com/
Our holiday pajama drive has been more successful than ever this year. We have collected over 600 pairs of pajamas for seniors in need! We give these wonderful donations out to various senior communities throughout the Dallas and Fort Worth area. The joy it brings to so many ones in need of a fresh pair of pajamas is overwhelming. We have been able to bring this joy due to a number of generous individuals. We want to thank each and everyone one of you that has helped the pajama drive. Without your generous giving we would not be able to spread this much needed holiday cheer. We are blessed by the pajama drive and hope to see it grow year after year!
We wanted to pass on some complements we received about two of our Staff members:
Our newest client in Plano called to say that CNA “Enetty was awesome. She really helped my mom.” In a North Dallas nursing case, our client called to tell us that everything went well and that RN Massi was excellent!
Congratulations Enetty and Massi! Thank you for shining so bright.
Having trusted and valued resources in our community is so important. No matter what service you find yourself in need of, there are many service providers. The question really is, how do you separate the good from the bad and the mediocre from the excellent? In our next blog series we will highlight resources in our community that we have personally found to be EXCELLENT, and of course we wouldn’t alight ourselves with anything less than THE BEST!
This week, we’ve invited Paul Markowitz, founder of Senior Living Specialists, to write a blog regarding senior living communities. Paul went through the senior care maze of finding the appropriate assisted living community when he was 26 years old as his mom got diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 59.
Whether somebody is 26, 56 or 86, you might know of somebody that might have to go through the arduous task of finding the appropriate Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Long Term Care Facility or Residential Care Home. Most people end up in crisis as nobody wants to think about placing a friend or family member as I was when I had to right place for my mom.
Below are 5 key questions that I recommend for each family to ask when touring a senior living facility:
- How long has the Executive Director been at the community and what is their experience?
- What is the yearly increase in the price of rent? What has it been over the past 3 – 5 years?
- What amenities are provided? e.g. transportation, meals, etc.
- What is a typical day like and what time does day get started? What is security like at the community?
- How do you determine when a resident needs to move to a higher level of care? Is the family responsible for identifying this or will the community let the family know?

We are so excited to share the progress we are making with our new office location. Below is what our office space currently looks like, but with some TLC and vision, here is what the finished product will look like. Contractors have started their work and our Fort Worth journey will soon begin! The new space is located at 300 East Pennsylvania Avenue across the street from the new UT Southwestern Moncrief Medical Center at Fort Worth Ophthalmology Clinic. Stay tuned for updates and more exciting news to come. We can’t wait to throw a kickoff party in our new space!
